Vilnius terminal revamp gets underway

Renovation of the passenger terminal at Vilnius in Lithuania is to start in February.  The work follows successful completion of its runway reconstruction last summer, during which the airfield was completely closed for six weeks and operations moved to the country’s second city, Kaunus.  The building opened in 2007 and has a capacity of 3.5m ppa.  During 2016 and 2017, passenger traffic reached almost 3.8m ppa.

Olaf Martens, director of Vilnius Airport said: “That is why a decision to conduct terminal reconstruction was made. After the reconstruction, passengers will be provided with a faster and a more convenient customer service, as well as an expanded commercial area.  The refurbished terminal will also provide better working conditions for our employees.”

He added that that after its reconstruction, Lithuania’s main air gateway will be able to welcome up to 20,000 passengers per day.  It was designed to support a throughput of  around 9,500 customers every day, but is currently being used by between 14,000 and 15,000.

The project will take place in several phases, the last of which will be completed in 2021.  It is estimated to cost €60m, of which €20m will be spent on upgrades to existing equipment and replacing obsolete items, while rebuilding the apron and taxiway will cost €12 million.

Airports of the World March / April 2018, issue 76 – on sale on February 22 – includes an in-depth review of the activities that took place at Kaunus Airport while Vilnius was closed for the runway resurfacing work last summer.
