May/June 2013 - Issue 47 - Current Issue

This issue of Airports of the World includes a major on the UK’s Birmingham Airport. The Midlands facility is ideally placed to serve a wide catchment, including London. This factor will be even more relevant by 2026 when the HS2 high speed rail link from the capital is due to open. In a separate feature we examine the implications HS2 will have for the UK’s aviation industry.

Further afield the issue covers the many small airports of the Tonga Islands in the southwest Pacific. Despite a recent change of domestic carrier, the ‘Friendly Islands’ as Tonga is widely known, relies on a network of flights for communication. At the opposite end of the earth from our European latitude is the Antarctic. One way to get there is to fly from Cape Town and land on the ice at the Novolazarevskaya Air Base – an extraordinary experience aboard an Ilyushin Il-76.

Back in the UK we report on the opening of the first Airbus A380-capable gate at London’s Gatwick Airport and include a series of black and white photos illustrating London/Heathrow in 1969 and 1970. You also have the chance to win a book covering the story of Mumbai’s airports.

We take an in –depth look at the Milan airport system (Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo) and examine the expansion currently underway at São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport in Brazil as the nation prepares to host the FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics in the next three years.

March/April 2013 - Issue 46

In this issue of Airports of the World we feature Europe’s largest hub airport – Frankfurt – one that is making the most of its four runways and recently added pier to temp airlines away from other hubs. We also feature Taipei’s second airport, the downtown Songshan, which remains popular due to its proximity to the city centre. Continuing the city airport theme is Rio de Janeiro’s Santos Dumont, where it is possible to get incredibly close to and even cross the active runway. From Latin America we feature Medellín and its distinctive terminal while from Europe the Costa del Sol gateway at Malaga takes centre stage.

There is a behind the scenes look at London City Airport to discover what goes on during the dark of night to ensure the facility is ready for flights each morning. Amsterdam/Schiphol provides a blast from the past with an interesting spread of black and white photos from the late 1960s. African airports have received some particularly bad press over the years, but we are pleased to report on the success of Brazzaville’s airport, which has been transformed following considerable investment.

The latest news stories includes the sale of Stansted, the imminent opening of Hamad International Airport in Qatar, the inauguration of Dubai’s Concourse A – the first dedicated to the Airbus A380 – and the announcement of more delays to the opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport.
